What to do when the iPad screen is too dark

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

If your iPad or iPhone screen is too dark even though you have set the brightness to 100 percent, do this:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Zoom.

  2. Check that zoom isn't activated if you don't need it, or…

  3. If you need zoom, check that Zoom Filter is set to None.

This often solves the issue with an inexplicably dark display.

You can check and change brightness settings in Control Center or Settings > Display & Brightness.

I found this out after first buying a new iPad for my wife. Her old iPad screen suddenly got much darker. After loooking through all the screen and brightness settings without finding anything, I drew the conclusion that it was a hardware issue. When the new iPad arrived and I had set it up, it too had the same brightness issues. Then I understood that there must be something software related after all. Googling led me to this hidden setting. The strange thing is that my wife never activated zoom or zoom filters. I’m thinking it may have come with an update of iPadOS (13.4.1) that I recently made. We will send the new iPad back to Apple. It seems her old one might have more to give.
