Do you have a personal domain name?

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

With your own domain name, you can personalize your (and your family's/friends/coworkers) email addresses. Instead of having firstname.lastname@gmail.com you could have king@thecastle.com, will@thehansenfamily.com, sendspamhere@emailfactory.com or anything you like. A personal domain name can make you more interesting when you apply for jobs or roam dating sites. When you own a domain name, you can create as many email addresses as you like. Like one that you give out to friends and family and another that you use for subscriptions and memberships. That way you lower the risk of getting spam to your personal email address and can retire the spam receiving one if it gets too much junk. Having a domain name isn't expensive or complicated. It is like a subscription service that you pay 10 to 20 USD a year for. If you get tired of it, you can end the subscription and forget about it. Gmail and other services work well with personal domains. You can make it look like emails you send comes from your own domain, not your Gmail, Hotmail or other accounts. If you need a website, you can use your personal domain for that as well. Have you thought of getting your own domain name?

Yes, I ordered a domain name 3 months ago.  I paid 30 USD. In addition to the domain name, I also got 50 GB of space for a home page.

Okay, with website space, it sounds like a reasonable price. Did you choose a .com or other top-level domain? What will you use it for?

I don't personally, and always wondered about how people did it as I was always used to having a domain over the years. Instead I just have multiple emails from everyone Laughing out loud Even going back to the MSN days!

I have, but that's because my brother fixed a domain and got the whole family personal e-mails. I usually use google but can chose to send mails from either my gmail address or my personal one.

Deviantart, photos, drawing and paintings.

#2: I selected a .nu domain since it was not already taken and quite cheap compared to other domains. I was after website space more than personalized email addresses. But as you pointed out, Google mail can be adjusted to let me send emails from my own domain. So now I have tried that. It works well! My website space is used primarily for publishing results of my family tree investigations (genealogy).

#3: That's another thing with personal domains. You can take them with you whatever email service you use. People never have to keep track of your different addresses. I got my first domains in the middle of the nineties and one of them I still use. As a gamer I thought you might be a person who use a personal domain. 🙂 #4: 👍🏼 #5: Ah, I am in the process of digitizing old (mainly 19th century) family photos and documents. The plan is to publish them online someday so all family members, and possibly other genealogists, can see and use them. I find the visual parts of genealogy most exciting, and that's where I can contribute to future generations. 😀

#6: Have you heard of "Porträttfynd"? (https://www.rotter.se/faktabanken/portrattfynd). I am not saying it is the best platform for publishing family photos, but it can be worth considering. I myself is struggling much to find a good way of working, apps, and ways of publishing old family photos. This went rather off-topic now. :-)

I am aware of its existence but have never visited their site. Another place with a similar purpose is Svenskt Porträttarkiv. They have well over 700,000 portraits. Perhaps they should make it a joint effort.

I think I have a workflow for digitizing photos that work now. One thing I haven't decided on is if I should make the images look like they do or convert them to black and white. I am leaning towards making them look like the originals.

Since a scan in color can easily be converted to b/w, but not vice versa, I agree with you.

Yes, and often the photos were developed with sepia color and then I think it’s fair to show them like that. Instead of traditional scanning I take photos. It’s much faster.

I always thought that they were for specialist use I guess? Now I know more I think I would be tempted!

You can use them for anything you like. Over the years, I probably have owned a hundred different domain names. Whenever I got an idea for a business or project, I used to register a domain name (provided that I had a good idea for the name). I’m trying not to do that now and I have gotten rid of lots of domains that I think realistically I will not do anything with or no longer use. I have less than 20 now. 😀
