Audio Pro Addon T3 perfect speaker for iPad

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

I recently searched for a wireless battery driven active speaker to use at home and wherever I want to share music with others. After reading a lot of reviews and comparison tests my choice fell on Audio Pro Addon T3.

The T3 uses Bluetooth 4 or an AUX cable to connect to phones, computers, iPads and other audio devices. Pairing with Bluetooth is as easy as pushing a button on the speaker and choosing it on your device. It can only be connected to one device at a time so quick pairing is important. I use it with my iPhone and an iPad and haven't had any issues with the pairing so far.

The controls on the speaker are few. On/off button, Bluetooth pairing, AUX and BT choice buttons, and volume up/down. To power on or off you press and hold the power button for about three seconds. I would have preferred a switch that went on and off immediately instead. The three-second wait is annoying and doesn’t seems to have a purpose. In addition to the buttons, the control panel on top of the speaker has LEDs indicating that power is on, current battery level and if Bluetooth or AUX input is active.

On the back there is power in, AUX in and a USB port to charge a phone or tablet. It doesn’t take input or do other things. The USB port is 5 volt and 1000 mA out. In other words it doesn’t do any quick charging, but is better than nothing. It can however charge from the built-in battery when the speaker isn’t connected to external power.

Soundwise I am very pleased with the Addon T3. Sound is clear and distinct and it fills our living room with enough sound for my liking. I have set my iPhone equalizer to “Late night” and find the result to work for most music types. Setting the volume on a device like this is a little special since you have two volume controls. One on the speaker and another on your device. When I want to play loud I set the speaker volume on max and on the phone I finetune the volume. If I want to go from high to very low volume, I have to adjust both the speaker and the phone volume again, because if I leave the speaker on max, the volume steps on the phone are too coarse. It isn’t a big issue, and I don’t see how else it could be done, but worth noting anyway.

Build quality of the T3 seems to be very high for what it costs. This also makes it heavier than many other speakers in the same price level. I haven’t weighed it but think I saw a technical specification mentioning something like two kilo. On the top of the speaker there’s a leather handle (supposedly made from real leather). The back plate and control panel seems to be made from aluminum. Everything on this speaker gives an impression of being built to last for a long time.

On max volume the built-in (but replaceable) battery lasts up to 12 hours and on half volume the specifications say it will last for 30 hours. In my opinion this is quite impressive. I haven’t timed it myself.

The size of Addon T3 is 115 x 215 x 135 mm (height x width x depth). That makes the longest side less than that of an iPad 9.7.

T3 isn’t water or dust resistant, so put it in a plastic bag or protect it some other way if you are on the beach or in a workshop. Plastic bags worked well for me when I did some dusty home renovations recently.

The T3 has been awarded by What Hi-Fi? on several occasions. “Best portable wireless speaker” was one of them.

When I bought my Audio Pro Addon T3 it was on sale. I paid about 140 USD.

Having used it daily for three months I can say that I am very pleased with the Addon T3. Not only is it good for playing music, but I have come to realize how much it adds to movie watching on the iPad. It is a completely different experience having rich audio accompanying any film. The portability combined with cordlessness makes it easy to take anywhere in the house as well as on some trips.

Audio Pro is a Swedish company founded in the 1970s.

Which colour did you go for?

I'm presuming it does not come with a wifi connection? I am a big user of Spotify and I would love a speaker that works well with their Spotify Connect feature.

All the best, Leia

I chose the white one. It makes it almost invisible in our house.

It doesn't use Wi-Fi but Bluetooth. I use it with Spotify a lot from my phone or iPad.

There are Audio Pro speakers that use Wi-Fi and Support Spotify Connect. Take a look at the Addon C3 for instance. It has multiroom Support, which means you can have several if them an play in all or one of them. The price is a bit higher but I have seen it retail at around 200 USD.
