How to create 1-minute artworks with iPad

Sometimes you need an eye-catching image to illustrate an article or hang on a wall. Often the easiest way is to create them yourself with a little help of apps.

Waterlogue is an app that converts photos to water color paintings. There are about 15 different styles to choose from and you can tweak them until you are satisfiedwith the result. I’ve found that it makes the paintings quite well if the original photo has a lot of contrasting colors or light. Waterlogue cost 4 USD.

Percolator is an app that works with colored circles. As with Waterlogue, contrast and lots of color work best. You can adjust the recipe the app uses. The same photo can turn out thousands of different ways depending on your choices. Results can be quite eye-catching. The user interface is trying to mimic a coffee machine. I don’t think that’s the best way to make the interface. It makes it fiddly to work with. Percolator cost 3 USD.

A third app that I like is BeCasso. Here you can choose between many different master's styles. As with the other apps, not all styles work well with all images. You often have to try many different styles until you find what you want. In addition to tweaking the styles, you can also choose between different canvas materials. BeCasso cost 3 USD.

One last app I want you to know about is named SnapDot. It has some similarities to Percolator in that it paints with circular objects, but instead of circles it is colored dots. It’s surprising how much a few dots can illustrate. Try it on a portrait and you will see what I mean. You can adjust dot size, contrast and exposure. An especially good thing is that you can export images as vector graphics. This is great If you make logos or print very big. You can also import vectors into vector editors, like Graphic, and continue editing there. SnapDot is free with in-app purchases.

One thing I like about all these apps, is that you can start with a photo that isn’t very good as long as it has interesting contrasts and colors. It doesn’t matter if it’s blurry, over- or underexposed.

Even our living room can look mildly interesting as art. This photo couldn’t be used for anything in its original version.
