Using a mobile phone for photography can drain the battery quickly. Therefore it’s a good idea to bring spare energy in the form of a portable power bank. They are small enough to fit in a bag or pocket and can give you several full charges.

How to choose a portable power bank for your phone

There are thousands of different power banks. Different brands, different capacities, different connections. For a phone you usually want a power bank with USB connectors. USB-A and USB-C will work for most.

When it comes to capacity, bigger is better (and heavier and more expensive). Previously I had a Huawei power bank with 13,000 mAh capacity. It could charge my iPhones several times over, which meant that in theory I could stay away for days without the need for a wall outlet. Since USB is pretty universal I could also use it to charge iPads.

I would recommend a power bank that has at least 10,000 mAh capacity if you are only using it to charge your phone. It will let you charge most phones 2, 3 or even 4 times over.

Recently I got an Anker PowerCore+ with a little over 20,000 mAh battery capacity. I use it to charge both my phone and an iPad. That’s why I choose the higher capacity. It also has technology (PowerIQ) that gives your devices maximum charge depending on what battery they have. This saves a lot of time compared to “dumb” chargers that provide the same charge for everything.

One last thing I would like to point out about portable power banks is that quality is important. If they are not properly constructed they can damage your devices. Therefore I would recommend choosing quality brand chargers and beware of counterfeit copies. Look at reviews on Amazon before you decide what to buy.
