How to use Safaris built-in password manager

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

Like with many Apple things the password manager in Safari doesn't look like much, but it has all the basic functionality.

Passwords are added automatically and you can add them manually, you can have passwords autofilled in Safari, it can create secure passwords for you, the password database is encrypted and passwords are synced between all your Apple devices via iCloud. You can also use Touch ID to unlock the password list for speed. It detects if you are using another password than the one saved and offers to automatically update the password list.

How to activate autofill in Safari

Go to Settings > Safari > AutoFill and enable Names and passwords.

How to add passwords manually to Safari passwords

  1. Go to Settings > Safari > Passwords.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and tap Add Password.
  3. Fill out the form and tap Done. All fields are mandatory.

How to delete passwords

  1. Go to Settings > Safari > Passwords.
  2. Swipe left on the password you want to delete.
  3. Tap Delete.

How to change passwords

  1. Go to Settings > Safari > Passwords.
  2. Tap on the password item you want to change.
  3. Tap Edit and make your changes.
  4. Tap Done.

How to autofill passwords in Safari.

  1. Open the web page and login form you want to login to.
  2. Tap one of the login fields to bring up the keyboard.
  3. Tap the Autofill Password link to the left above the keyboard. If you have more than one login for this website there will be a Passwords link instead. It lets you choose the login you want to use.

How to generate a safe password in Safari

  1. Open the web page and registration form you want to register at.
  2. Tap the password field to bring up the keyboard.
  3. Tap the Passwords link to the left above the keyboard and then Suggest New Password… in the pop-up that opens.

This will open another pop-up with a password suggestion. It will be a password that is hard to remember. That is also the point. It should be very hard to guess. Since you will almost never fill in passwords by hand this is not a problem.

  1. Tap Use Suggested Password to have the password filled into the password field and saved to your iCloud Keychain.

Next time you log in to this site, the password will be in your Safari passwords list.

How to manually copy a password from Safari passwords

  1. Go to Settings > Safari > Passwords.
  2. Tap on the password item you want to copy from.
  3. Tap and hold on the password.
  4. Tap Copy.

Now you can paste the password wherever you like.

I use 1Password since many years. It is a very good password manager. I first bought it because of its simplicity. The last couple of years I think they have added many things I don't need, like family and company password vaults. At the same time Apple has improved iOS own password manager. Now I'm thinking of switching. The big issue in making the decision is that I have almost 400 passwords, credit cards and other secrets in 1Password. I would have to manually move them from 1Password to Safari passwords, unless someone tells me there is an app for that. :-)

Best regards, Niklas 🎈
